Website may be up and down over next few months. I'm currently doing a complete overhaul of everything. Going back to simple individual .htm pages, new overall site theme, sanitizing and cleaning up html of all pages and blog posts, attempting to implement a new tooling and publishing system etc etc.

Philosophy of the conc

Title: Philosophy of the conc
Date: March 3, 2004

I am writing the fallowing tutorial based on my own experience conc jumping in half-life team fortress classic. For those newbie's out there who don't know what the term conc means, it is short for concussion grenade jumping. Concussion grenades can typically be used only by medics or scouts.

If you are reading this page it means you are having trouble trying to learn how to perform this type of specialized jumping. Conc jumping is more than just throwing a conc grenade and hoping for the best, it is an exact science and takes allot of practice to truly master, especially in the heat of the battle when you must make split second decisions.

It is best if I just show you a picture so you can see what it is I am talking about.

From the picture drawn in red you can see the general direction you can expect to travel when you hit certain areas of your conc. Generally the very center of the conc will not propel you in a given direction unless you already are traveling at sufficient velocity. The Sweet spot are the areas marked in green. This is the area of your conc that has the most force and when performed correctly will propel you the farthest.

Now that you know what areas of your conc you should try to hit, I can tell you about how you can actually do a basic conc jump.

  1. The first thing you need to be aware of is that you will be propelled much farther and hit your conc more correctly if you "fall" into your conc. What I mean by that is this, find a wall to toss your conc grenade at. Try to toss it as close to the wall as possible.
  2. Quickly run over and stand directly over your conc. Although you do not have to exactly stand on top of it, as you can see from the picture above, that standing off to the side of the conc can cause you to be propelled away from it, rather then being propelled above it. Now with proper timing jump up into the air. Now as soon as you jump into the air make sure to hold your crouch button. This will cause your feet to be higher up into the air, and more in range of your conc's sweet spot.
  3. And now comes the tricky "falling" part. You have to time your jump so that your conc grenade goes off as your are falling back down to the ground.

If your conc goes off as you are still in the progress of accelerating upwards into the air (IE: jumping) your conc may not propel you very far or not at all. So lets review ...

  1. Throw conc
  2. Make sure to stand relatively on top of it
  3. Time your jump so that your are falling back down towards the conc when it goes off.

The best thing you can do, to learn from this tutorial is to practice the previous three steps until you are comfortable concing and are able to jump and conc at the right time.

This particular method of concing is very basic and is the easiest way to do a conc.

You may find people apposed to conc jumping during your game travles, and to those who make that argument I say this. Quite simply conc jumping is what seperates the newbies from the pros.
